Services
Our Ambulances
ESD1 deploys two active units 24 hours a day and one unit that operates during peak times in the District 24 hours per day, every day. Depending on the severity of the medical emergency, residents of ESD1 are transported to larger hospitals in the Austin area, including trauma centers. The time and distance required to transport many patients requires the use of well-equipped, advanced ambulances. Because of this need, all ESD1 ambulance are mobile intensive care units (MICUs).
Our Paramedics & EMTs
Additionally, each ambulance is staffed with at least one paramedic, which is the highest level of emergency medical training, and one emergency medical technician (EMT). Not all ambulance services use individuals with this level of training, especially when residents are in close proximity to a hospital.
The District uses paramedics and other EMTs with advanced training because of the greater amount of transport time residents of ESD1 are likely to incur when being transported to the nearest trauma centers. The medical director of San Marcos Hays Emergency Medical Services, a licensed physician, determines the appropriate protocols and types of care that our emergency services personnel may provide during transport.
Partnerships
NHCESD1 does not provide firefighting or rescue services. North Hays County ESD No. 6 provides fire and rescue services, but not ambulance services, for nearly the same geographical area as ESD1. ESD1 and ESD6 work together to best meet the needs of the residents they serve.
